The perfect symbol for the subjectivity of human perception, ink blots also produce compelling and often beautiful shapes. With Subconscious, Gardner painted one and then coupled it with another notion, depth. The wool is carved higher than the concentric coils of silk, providing added dimension and texture. The layering effect hints at, but does not entirely reveal all that goes on below the surface.
